Tiling - Index pin location

Lets say for simplicity you are working with a full sheet of 48x96. So on a Pro5 you need 2 tiles on the Y axis.

If i put a locator pin at X=1 Y=45, then on the 2nd tile where exactly do i put that pin?

Lets say you do 1/2 inch overlap. So then is the 2nd location at Y=89.5? Which is the first location doubled minus the overlap. Is that correct?

You put the pin exactly “Tile Height” away from the other pin. Overlap just causes both paths to cut that area.

If your tiles are 48", you would put the holes at X1 Y1, and X1 Y49,
Or in your example, X1 Y45, and X1 Y93

Why 93? I’m not understanding the math on that one and that is what is confusing me. Because it’s 3 inches from the top? Is that the way to look at it?

because 45 + 48 (Your tile height) = 93. You arbitrarily chose 45. I just added 48" (And assumed your Tile Height was 48")

[edit] just looked at the specs & the cutting envelope is 48.7" x 48.7". So I think I would go with
X1 Y0.5, and X1 Y48.5. Then you can create both holes on the first setup, and then move the 2nd hole to where the first hole was. And the holes are drilled in machine units, in case it’s not perfectly calibrated, and the cuts should line up.

Gotcha. Well I have to be above 40" as there are some parts across the bottom, otherwise i would have picked a lower spot. I’ll have to dig into the sheets to see if i can find a usable location that could be drilled from the first sheet. I was also planning on using machined pins for accuracy so i don’t want to risk hitting them with a cutter.

Remove the pin once it’s clamped down. It’s just for location.

What about drilling a hole at 48.5, move your tool back to 0.5 and position the stock so the hole lines up with the cutter.

If you have some kind of fence on the left edge, you could use a vee bit to make a mark at Y0 on the fence, and Y48 on the stock. Then just slide the stock along the fence until the 2 marks line up.

The only crucial thing is you slide parallel to the Yaxis, without moving the X axis, and you move as exactly as you can the “Tile Height”.

Makes sense.

i think i’m going to need to setup a Y guide rail on at least one side, or both sides to help with a 8ft sheet. I’ve seen a few things where you clamp something down and then machine the edge to make sure it’s straight/parallel to the table.
