Toolpath generation takes a really long time V8.42

Windows 11 PC with 32 GB memory

For a 3D carve finishing path of a 34 mm diameter coin:

Version 8.42 takes 2 minutes and 55 seconds to calculate
Version 7.78 takes under 3 seconds

The result in both cases is a 2 minute carve.

What model resolution settings are being used?

Not sure what you mean by model resolution. The original STL is 118 mm in diameter. When comparing the two versions I did the identical steps. The results are repeatable.

I forgot to mention that when calculating the finish toolpath in V8.42, the Carbide Create CPU utilization runs at 97% and I can hear my computer fan ramp up.

Where did the diamond drag cutter tool definition come from?

I don’t remember where I got the settings but it’s the MC Etcher diamond drag bit. Version 7 and earlier never had a problem with it.

The way the cutter is defined means it covers a large area of the part (you can see it animated in the simulation). That large area means the finish toolpath needs to check for collisions with every part of the cutter, which is a lot of extra math.

You can shorten the flute length, which should reduce the cutter’s overall diameter. That should make it calculate more quickly and probably be more physically accurate, too.

Regarding V7, I don’t recall when we made changes, but at some point, we found cases where the finish toolpath was not accurate enough, specifically with V-shaped cutters, so we made it a lot more robust, and that added calculation time.

What are the recommended profile settings for the MC Etcher 90 and 120 degree diamond drag bits? I don’t believe I was able to find them when I got them.
