Tracing decorative designs in Carbide Create

In consideration of the recent request for decorative images, we’ll work out re-drawing this here.

Begin by importing the image onto a background layer:

Set the stock size to encompass everything which you wish to draw:

Zoom in, turn off Snap-to-grid:

and start drawing.

Circles are easy:

Other shapes need to be drawn using the Curve tool:

If need be, go into Node Edit mode to adjust.

For shapes which must stop at a particular point, draw past it — easier and more precise to trim with a Boolean operation:

To double the lines, inset:

Then trim the outer with a Boolean operation:

with the trimming geometry as the Key object (dashed highlight):

Then remove the inner from the outer:

Repeat.

Again, where appropriate, draw larger and later trim:

until one arrives at:

Continue redrawing elements:

until half are done:

then duplicate

mirror horizontally

drag into position

scale and adjust

Clean up the overlapping and adjacent paths:

Lastly draw the centerline of the perimeter:

Inset and offset by half the width of the line:

and delete the original:

Done.
