Tree rounds and centering

Looking to carve a bowl out of a tree round. How do I properly align my starting corner in setup? Round is irregularly shaped.
Is there a way to create the shape for design ?

Since it’s not too big, how about grid paper.
Trace the shape, pick a origin point.
Plot some coordinates.
Or
Scan the paper and convert it to vectors

When I am cutting rounds… in CC I make a rectangle that fits the smallest dimesions of the actual stock. Then I make sure the design fits in that rectangle. Use center for the orientation. Mark the spot on the actual stock that allows for the design to fit which becomes the “center” and use it for setting your zero and you are good to go

I like Jim’s paper idea. I might, instead, cut out of paper the shape of the inside of the bowl with a small hole in the center. Lay this on your blank stock so it fits everywhere & mark the center.
Create your programs using Center zero point.

Or, draw a bullseye in your design and put it on a hidden layer.

Export the entirety of the design as an SVG.

Open the SVG in a tool which will maintain the dimensions such as Inkscape

Print the design (if need be, tiling it, but usually a legal sheet of paper can be printed and usually affords enough of the design that one can get a sense of placement).

Position the paper design on the round, set XY zero at the bullseye.

I recently did an “unusually” shaped piece.

I installed a fence along the “X” axis. Then I used the left waste board to line up the “Y” axis.

Then I measured from both the X and Y to the “Center” of my piece.

In CC I moved the Vector to those coordinates.

You can take a photo of your piece and do a line trace to get the shape into CC, just note the orientation so you can align the Vector in CC with how the piece is held on your wasteboard.

Alternatively, you could cut out a Zero Jig finder and use that.
