Well I have pulled the wires out of the USB side of the cable by rushing and not unplugging when I bought the computer into the house.Has any one replaced this cable other than what has been supplied with the machine?I am in NZ and can not find one locally,I suspect my best option is to get one from carbide.
The cable is UO23-006
So depending on what speed usb you have the computer end is USB A and the controller end is USB B. The A & B are types of usb connctors. You should be able to get a usb cable locally. The usb cable they use for printers used the A & B type connectors.
USB A Male
USB B Male
Most USB 2.0 cables will work for the Shapeoko
USB is a standard plug type so you should be able to get one locally maybe at a computer store or even a retailer that sells computers and printers.
Do they have Amazon NZ or maybe AUS? Not sure what your import laws are.
Thanks Guy,the one with the machine has the 2 ferrite rings and I wonder do I need them,I am sure I can get the cable without them but not sure if they are essential.
The rings are ferrite beads. The ferrite beads keep down stray signals and noise interferrence. If you can get ones with the ferrite beads them get it but if they dont have them try it out. The cables are not expensive.
A ferrite bead (also known as a ferrite block, ferrite core, ferrite ring, EMI filter, or ferrite choke) is a type of choke that suppresses high-frequency electronic noise in electronic circuits.
If you cannot get one with a ferrite bead and your old cable is bad see if you can cut the beads off your old cable and clamp them over your new cable. Depending on how they made the original cable it might clamp on and off the old cable or it might be just made with a hole in it and slipped on before the cable ends were crimped on.
The nicest cable I have is a transparent one (from the G3 iMac days) which has braided metal sleeving visible under the plastic to which I’ve added a pair of ferrite beads.
Here is the cable I found. There is also a longer one. They typically call them USB Printer Cables
Thanks Brandon and Will,With the printers being wireless my supply of surplus cables are minimal but I think I have a shielded clear one that Will mentions that was used way back with a USB hub,I need to hunt it down when it gets light here. The rings I will have a go at getting them off the damaged lead.
I doubt you’d be able to reuse them — I’d suggest just buying some — links on the wiki:
Hi all, look what I found off an old scanner many years old and will try it later on,thank Will for pointing me in the right direction,it is a shorter cable but it will keep me going.
It is funny how people seldom get rid of old equipment. I have boxes full of cat 5 Ethernet cables and tons of other misc cables in boxes. Here in the US it is illegal to dump old electronics in the garbage. When I lived in Houston monthly they had collection points that would take old electronics and they would dispose of them the right way. The county had hazardous waste collection sites for paint and other chemicals as well.
