Trouble Getting 3d image correct

I am trying to create the plaque below:

I am almost done but having issues creating the 3d carve of the wreath around the star.

I am using round add and it looks like:

Any Suggestions on how to make it look like the wreath?

This is a matter of figure-ground reversal — you will need to remove the outer geometry from the selection:

by ungrouping:

and shift-clicking on it to remove it from the selection:

This will then allow modeling the leaves and so-forth rather than their borders:
