Unable to measure a tool with bitsetter and HDZ

I am trying to measure a new tool with the bitsetter in CM but when it touches the bitsetter probe it just starts jackhammering the bitsetter until it errors out or I stop it manually. I have video but I am not allowed to upload mp4 files to this forum.

Any one have any ideas why this would be happening?

This is the first time I have attempted this since upgrading to the new HDZ spindle combination.

Thanks,
Bryan M.

First, connect to the machine and go to Settings | Debug, then press the BitSetter button — does it register as a Probe input?

Send photos showing how it is mounted and wired up and connected to support@carbide3d.com — until this is worked out, disable the BitSetter and use the machine w/ only one tool per file.

When I go to Settings | Debug in CM and press the button on the bitsetter, it is not registering as a probe input.

The light on the bitsetter does light up but it does not register input state does not change in the Settings | Debug window.

The bitsetter is connected to a connecter on a small circuit board that plugs into the main PCB. Is it possible that this connection is loose?

That is a question for the folks at support — they will work out what is wrong and how to handle it.

If you swapped the Z axis out to the HDZ you’ll have to tell that to CM. Run the setup Wizzard and see if that helps. Also, is the Bitsetter engaged?

And is the magnet for the BitZero touching the BitZero block? That can affect things.

Cullen S. No the magnet is not touching the bitzero block, Thank you for your suggestion.

Hi Ed,

The bitsetter is engaged in CM and the red power light comes on when I press the button on the bitsetter. However, it does not register in the debug window under Settings.

I did also run the setup wizard in CM to configure it for HDZ and VFD spindle after getting everything upgraded.

Just completed troubleshooting with Carbide Support and it looks like the brand new bitsetter that I just purchased a couple of months ago is bad.

They are sending me a new one with a new splitter board so hopefully that will resolve the issue.

Thanks to everyone for all of the support and suggestions.

Glad you got it figured out.
I was about to suggest that if you have a BitZero and it works properly then it sounds like there is a disconnect between the BitSetter and the splitter board, or a bad splitter board.

I can remember having problems making a dimmer switch work when I was first learning how to do electrical work. My dad told me, “Sometimes it’s the equipment,” when I had tried everything I knew to do, and darn it! Wasn’t it the equipment!

This topic and thread made me think of that. Glad you found the fix.
