Undermount Rail Light Recommendations?

I have a Shapeoko3 XL and I have some janky little puck lights from ikea mounted inside my enclosure. They’re dying. I see the newest Shapeoko comes with a sweet LED light that mounts under the rail. Is that sold separately? If not, does anybody have a good recommendation for one?

I’ve never been disappointed with LEDs from SuperBrightLEDS. I’ve bought plenty from eBay/China and regretted the life of them.

nice. did you mount these to your cnc or in your enclosure?

oooooh. color changing option too! it’ll be a cnc party haha!

I have been using this light for about two years now. it comes as a two pack.

I dont have an led strip under my SO3 XXL and am considering getting some as well. However I do have a Rikon LED portable light with a magnetic base that I use so I can see the marks for a center x and y positioning. I have found it very useful for a lot of things around the shop.

The mounting piece is magnetic as well as the bottom of the light. I just clip it on the front left corner of my Shapeoko and turn the flexible light so I can see the marks on my material.

LEDs can cause noise issues in electric circuits. Any issues with them mounted that close to the Step Motors or wiring?

I have a 3’ LED tube light mounted on chains from the ceiling and have no noise or interference issues with the CNC.

Love it  I have 2 articulating LED flashlights with a magnet in the butt end. they live attached to the I-beam curtain rod that my vacuum hose is suspended from. I can articulate them to where I want or I just pull them off. Love the Rikon LED portable light. I will have to look at an upgrade

@gdon_2003 Dang now one is in my Amazon cart

I think the noise is more about the power supply than the LEDs themselves. I got some 12v strip LEDs, hooked them up to a 12v wall wart, and never had any problems. The power to the LEDs is threaded through the wire chains.

I can’t imagine how any of what you referenced can happen. Can you reference a source, so I can study on it?

Depends on the LEDs and how you’re driving them.

A ‘simple’ 12V / 24V LED strip in a single colour can take constant voltage and be relatively ‘quiet’ electrically by using a series resistor to regulate current. You can spot these by the triplet of LED chips with a resistor in each cuttable segment of the tape.

The only electrical noise source in this case would be from the PSU and any noise on the DC output from the PSU if it gets heavily loaded (or is just cheap junk).

However, dimmable LEDs or colour changing LEDs are a proper source of EMI as they work by Pulse Width Modulation dimming. This is either done in the LED driver or on board the LED strip by LEDs with an onboard controller at the LED.

In the case of dimming at the driver to a ‘dumb’ strip you’ll have some sort of single or multi channel driver like this

Which rapidly turns the DC power on and off to the whole strip, creating consistent EMI from the whole strip and wiring, all acting as an antenna.

The individually addressable kind do this control at the chip (WS2812, SK6812, SK9822 etc.). The wiring to and along the strip is a common +V, 0V and signal which reduces the noise emission potential substantially.

All that being said, none of these make anywhere near as much electrical noise as one stepper motor on a Shapeoko and the LEDs would be the last thing I checked for a noise problem on my machine.

What I did think was worthwhile, was to stick the LED strip in an extrusion and then attach the extrusion to the bottom of the X beam to reduce the risk of it drooping or getting showered in Aluminium chips.

In other words, not even C3D thinks there’s a problem with installing strip lights.

Thanks Liam for the much in-depth response. My questions was born out of what I have experienced in AUDIO circuits; the noise from LED lighting can make loud buzzing noises that even the best shielded cabling can not resolve. My question was based on that experience and that some people of had issues with EMI on CNC machines. I am happy to report on both my Shapeoko and my Millright machines, I have not experience issues with interference.

I have the 6500K version of these in my enclosure - (Amazon link)
I went with the 6 pack and have them evenly spaced mounted to the ceiling of my enclosure. I love how bright it is!

That was the reason to buy these, they are brite, these old eyes need all the help they can get. I used two pieces of foam tape and centered the light under the gantry, the cord is tie wrapped to the drag chain so it won’t hangup. II have not had any issues running it this way.
