Using Oramask on painted surfaces

Some of my projects start with a painted work piece, then oramask applied on it. When I remove the oramask after carving, some or much of the paint comes off the surface.
Am I preparing the painted surface incorrectly, using the wrong paint, or something else?
Any one have a idea to correct this
Thanks

Is it just the paint being removed or is it also getting fibers pulled.

What material (paint, wood) are you using and how did you prep your material. Do you have any pictures.

Depending on the paint you use most paints need a cure time to form a complete bond to the subsurface and can be pulled off with with any type of paint.

I’ve used pine and MDF. I’ve used spray paint and brush on paint and get the same results. Do I need to let the paint cure longer, and if so, how long would you recommend
Thanks
David

I let paint dry/cure at least overnight before applying any masking. Thicker paint, like brushed-on I let go longer.

This is what I have had good results with.

Get a small bottle and test it out. You may want to try a cheaper brand of masking tape.

I have used this film for several years now and have not had any issues.

I have not experienced any paint or material lift with this.

If you do use a good quality paint the adhesion time can be longer its no different than painting inside of your house and masking off items to do trim on the wall, it can pull the paint off with the tape…its happened to me.

properly prepared surface… no dust (tack rag or compressed air), no oil or dirt, primer/filler then paint.
I rigged up my enclosure with a hole in the top that fits my dehydrator head. I can crank it up to 150° in there. I let it run overnight, let it cool off, then apply the Oramask.

Here’s one I applied the oramask too soon. Fortunately the customer liked the distressed look!

A lot of folks use various Oramask products. I have some but I seldom use it. Instead I use Easy Liner Adhesive Shelf Paper I get at Walmart and/or Lowes. It sticks well but does not seem to over stick. You could try some and it is relatively cheap compared to Oramask. Plus you can buy it locally if you need some.
