UV Resin for inlays

Has anyone tried the UV resin to do inlays? My biggest issue with epoxy is the wait time. It looks like some of that UV stuff cures in minutes with UV light. I am sure it isn’t good on deep pours but for .08” on a coaster would it work ok?

I saw some small lights, but I think I have a bulb left over from a lizard enclosure that would work if it is UV-A. It also claims to cure in 10-15 minutes in the sun.

It can be done using UV resin. Just an FYI that if you colour the resin, you must cure under the UV light for at least 5 minutes or longer. Deeper pours require a lot longer cure time and I would suggest doing it in layers otherwise only the top hardens and the bottom stays liquid as I learned from experience…

I certainly want it hard enough to flatten again. I typically wait 3 days with the regular resin just to make sure it’s good before I flatten out. That doesn’t seem so bad unless you are doing multiple colors that can’t be poured at the same time.

Being able to get something done in an afternoon would be much nicer. I may buy a small bottle and experiment.

I finally got to trying the UV resin.

First attempt was a complete failure as I was trying to use an old bulb that we bought to heat a reptile cage that claimed to put out UVA light. I guess not enough because the epoxy never hardened.

So, I bought a special purpose light. Clear resin hardened within a few minutes. I tried some black and it too hardened quickly. I left the light on for a good while just to be extra sure. The next day I cut the rest in half on the bandsaw and found that beneath the hard shell it was still liquid as you indicated.

This was not very deep, maybe.08 plus the bubble on top to make sure it wouldn’t sink. So, I am guessing very very thin layers would needed. If I can harden them in a few minutes a piece it may still be much more efficient than what I have been doing. I just don’t want to find out that it wasn’t hard when I put it on the CNC or drum sander to flatten :joy:
