V-bit for smaller letter engraving? What's your favorite?

I have some lettering that is 1/4" tall. I have a 60-deg v-bit but it’s too large for the fine detail needed. I’m thinking a 30-deg would be good, but maybe a 15 or 22-deg would be better?

Any preferences on v-bit or tapers spiral ballnose bits (1/32")? I’ve read 30-deg is a good all around, but I can’t find any size of the engravings that’s it’s suitable for.

I use the Amana which we sell quite a bit for smaller/finer text/engraving:

Recommended bit angle for a given text size:

  • <1" 45–60°
  • 1–2" 60°
  • 2–4" 60–90°
  • 4–6" 90°
  • 6–10" 90 to 120°
  • greater than 10" 120° or greater

I have a 15 degree and a 20 degree vee bits that I use a lot. I got them from Amazon but they work very well.

I also have a 60 degree Groovee Jenny from Cadance Manufacturing that does a great job but would not work well for real small work. But for larger vcarve jobs it works well.

The finer the line the smaller the angle needs to be.

I have no doubt in recommending the 30° GrooVee Jenny downcut vbit for small letters. I mask the letter engraving with “shelf paper”, seal with shellac and paint.

These bits are an investment. I don’t think they’ll ever wear out.

You didn’t say material your working with but if it’s aluminum, the R.25mm tapered ball nose works great for me.
