Vacuum hose setup

Hi All,

I have a Shapeoko Pro-5 4x4 and looking for ideas to setup the vacuum hose overhead that will follow the router to the maximum travel of the 4x4 bed.

Would love to see pictures and ideas of what some of you have done.

Thanks ~KAP

I went through a few iterations, i just ended up making a 2x4 truss roughly about center, and that has worked very well for me.

This was with a Festool hose, but i run a 4" dust collector hose now.

I just run mine up through a bungie hose looped at the ceiling.

I had this connected to my main collector:

And now have switched to this using the Dewalt shopvac instead.

Still some cleanup to do on that solution but it works.

I will probably redo mine once I get everything a little more squared away, but for the first iteration to just get up and running I put two 2x4s together with a 45 degree brace on the wall behind the machine and ran the hose along it. Secured the hose with a bungee.

That is what I am looking to do. Does the black PVC tube pivot/swing with the router?

~KAP

I actually had a swivel connection at the router end but it didn’t ever turn so I took it out.

I was thinking about finding a slightly larger PVC pipe to put the black one in and find a
Way to secure at the bottom so that it would swivel inside the outer pipe.

However, if my hose was about 6” longer I don’t think I would need it. It gets everywhere now but does strain slightly at the bitsetter. I have a longer hose that is too long which I didn’t want to trim until I knew this would work OK.

Keep in mind when placing the upright that it should be slightly toward the front since the router goes further from the center that way than at the back.

2x6 on a hinge attached to the wall:

I think a lot depends on your machine placement and if you want it mobile, most of these solutions i’m seeing are reliant on the CNC being in the same spot always. That didn’t work for me, i wanted to be able to move it around depending on what i’m doing. If i’m doing a 4x8 sheet of plywood for a cabinet, then i maybe need to shift things, so that is why the truss attached to the table was very important to me.

Point being, figure out your setup and then go from there. Either a swivel arm or just dropping the hose in the center works fine for full table movement.

Now that I have switched to Dewalt and small local separator it does make my setup more mobile. If I thought I was going to move it a lot I would integrate those devices with the table in some way.

I originally had it up against the wall but pulled it away 5-6 inches recently to do a tiling job on a full 48” length. I would really have to rearrange my shop to support a 4x8 sheet, but if the opportunity presents itself I could.

Here’s how I have mine set up.

That’s a slick laptop stand/arm.

I have those same Rockler wheels but have the plates installed so the wheels can easily be removed for other tools when needed.

I have a Pi on an arm that is not articulated like yours and it bounces a bit when the machine moves around. Do you have the same issue with that one?

It’s not a big deal as I don’t touch it during cutting

I’m going to get a set of the plates for the wheels at some point. That’s just way to handy not to have them.

My arm for my computer doesn’t bounce at all. The table is pretty solid and isn’t effected by the movement of the machine. I think if you do have some bounce that you could probably get some type of dampening stuff under your machine like what @WillAdams uses. Might be worth a try.

Yes, that is on my to do list but the idea of lifting the machine to slide it under by myself is not super appealing.

I also have leveling feet on the bottom of the table which may create another point for vibration.

Set this up using 2x4, 3/4” EMT, stranded wire to hold lvl, worked slick for all xy travel.
JIB brackets and hose Parts available on line to hold the hose to the pipe(bearings in the hose clamp)
Couldn’t figure out how to add photos to this reply. I’ll send the pictures and info to get the hose clamps in another reply

Apparently those wheels have a lifespan.
Cleaning up my garage today and moved the router table which has had a set of those on it for nearly 20 years. It was really hard to move and I saw why.

I have mine connected with a strap and connected to the ceiling with an eye hook. It works

Buy these. They are great … https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087CWQBYX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

Thanks. I will have to see which size fits in that Rockler contraption
