VFD Spindle Not Initializing (Spinning, it used to)

Hey everyone, I haven’t used my machine in a few months and went to cut something but the VFD Spindle won’t spin up via Carbide Motion. It will spin if I hold down the Jog button on the VFD, but that’s it. I did the following:

  • Updated Carbide Motion to 640 (Latest)
  • Rerun the Carbide Motion Setup
  • Checked power cord
  • Checked Spindle cable to Shapeoko 5 controller for damage and re-plugged both ends in a couple times
  • I’ve tried the VFD Spindle Warmup quick action a few times, and of course tried running a job I had to promptly stop after seeing the spindle not moving.

The Spindle and controlled are both plugged into a high quality Trip Lite Isobar at all times and the units are turned off and unplugged when not in use. I live in North Idaho, so we’re not known for thunderstorms or power surges. I’ve used it twice this year since we moved here in March. Nothing has changed in my shop. Everything else on the Shapeoko seems to be running normally.

Any ideas?

I’m a DevOps Engineer, so feel free to be technical. Thanks!

Is this red light on shutoff button on the top of the VFD lit brightly ?

There used to be an issue that showed up as a dim red light when lit.

I see POFF when starting, then 0.0 when ready.

If you’re speaking about the ring around the bottom on the front of the unit, it’s red. If I press the button the light is still red.

It should be not lit when the safety is on.
Bright red when ready to use.
