Just delivered this order of 400 walnut coasters to the client. All cut out on the shapeoko 5 pro that’s been a champ for me for almost 2 years now.
Classy!
Are you saying I can use my machine to actually make money!? ![]()
How long was it per coaster? If you care to share machine time vs hands on time I’d appreciate it as a point of comparison ![]()
Wow 400??? They look great! Applying the finish must have taken some time to do ![]()
If I am doing a job this big, then I would opt to use spray finish through an air gun for fast and even coating. Brushing on the finish on 400 pieces would be too time consuming, but one must do what one must do to get things finished.
I mostly ran 18 at a time which took just at an hour of machine time so less than 4 minutes per coaster
I used to work with some facilities folks and their favorite phrase was “Sometimes the only thing to do is to do it.”
They used to remind me of that when I got in too deep theory crafting better ways to do a thing ![]()
It took some time but I just sat and did them while watching football ![]()
It certainly crossed my mind but it came down to weighing the amount of coats and dry time as well as being able to spray all sides. I just sat down and hand rubbed them while watching football. One coat and no particular drying time led me to that decision. Last Christmas I did around 180 and went with a different option that took multiple coats so I had some past experience to weigh my choice against
It’s hard to tell if this is an inlay or laser cut or just v carved?
I opted to run these on the laser for the logo rather than Vcarve them. Some coasters I Vcarve, it just depends on the logo
Thanks for the info, laser seems the way to go.
How did you get the job? Build the relationship?
Yes sir, I had a large Christmas corporate gift order for a local construction company last year that was a mix of coasters and personalized valet trays. One of their clients were the Braves and they in turn reached out to me a few months later. They contracted me to make them several very large charcuterie boards in the shape of their script “a” from their 70’s logo for the suites in their spring training stadium. That job led to this one
This year I did a corporate Christmas order for the construction company once again but it was 65 laser engraved mini toolboxes. In each toolbox I included a laser engraved acrylic “Made by” card sith my business info and contact info
Here are a few photos of some of the boards
