First time caller here, please bear with me. I’ve looked over the washboard topics here and couldn’t find speeds/feeds when flattening washboard. Not sure if anyone is using the “standard” spindle (upgrading to VFD soon for many reasons) and using the #602E McFly. When using speeds and feeds here, my machines says it will only take 409 minutes for the 4x4 bed…too long. Anyone know a good “safe” speed that has done this? IPM and Stepover?
Softwood in Carbide Create is what I’ve always used.
Waste Board…sorry, auto correct.
At 10000 RPM, 180 IPM, 0.020" DOC, 0.75" Stepover, I get 17 minutes for one pass.
Thanks Tod! Appreciate it very much…I couldn’t stand the thought of 409 minutes.
I’m always worried about pushing the standard spindle, so thanks!
You can always use the simulation and change parameters as needed to whittle down your times. Even with the wide cut of the McFly you can run decent feeds/speeds with light depth of cuts (DOC). The light DOC saves washboard if you not sure the total dimension needed to get to the lowest point. It’s MDF and forgiving, especially when taking light passes as Tod points out.
Thanks Tim, appreciate it sir. Gonna give the old McFly a try (1st time) later today. Fingers crossed! ![]()

Here’s my file. You can speed up the Feedrate. I was pretty conservative.
Thanks for the file Anthony. Do you get the error when setting Zero where it says it will hit too far forward of the machine? Mine won’t really even go to the exact “front” of the machine - I can only job it short of around an 3/4" center bit to the forward edge of the waste board. Do you see that same issue? I’ve had this since day one.
Thanks again Tod, worked like a charm. The 180ipm worked great. Also had to tram the spindle, but works perfect now. Thanks again!
I just did mine today. I had the c2d file from here and kept the speeds that are in the file. Follow the instructions and it took 1hr for 2 passes for a total of 1mm removal. Spoil board is perfect again. I have a Shapeoko 5.1 Pro 4x4. Hope this helps.
I take a pencil and put witness(?) marks before I resurface. Once the pencil marks all disappear, i know that it is leveled.
