What Did I Do Wrong? Rogue Cut Mid Toolpath

I was carving a relief of this leopard in brass. It got perhaps 30 minutes in and got down a few details in the back and tail before going rogue and just started carving a straight line down the right third of the stock as pictured. Not sure if this is a settings, software or hardware issue. Any ideas?

Cutting parameters (inches):
SO: .008
DPP: .002

PR: 8.0
FR: 11.2
RPM: 24k

Some possible causes:

  • tool pulled out of collet
  • machine lost steps on retract causing it to thing it was higher than it actually was
  • mechanical interference causing lost steps
  • lost steps on retract due to insufficient Z-axis lubrication
  • wiring fault causing lost steps on retract
