What finish to use

I’m looking for suggestions on what finish to use on my latest epoxy inlay in walnut. I don’t want the walnut to get any darker since the epoxy is black and I want it to stand out. I have some clear satin Varathane but the instructions say to not apply it over fillers or puttys that contain wax. Would the epoxy be effected by it?
Any suggestions for a clear finish I could use?

Oil based finishes and sealers darken all wood it is put on. Water based finishes both sealers and finishes do not darken the wood but the first coat or two will raise the grain and you have to sand it after the sealer/first coat of finish. I use the Minwax water based polycrylic if I dont want to darken the wood. However I primarily use oil because it warms the color temperature of the wood which I like.

@gdon_2003 Thanks…good info. I’m a fan of Odies Oil but it will darken the walnut too much. Maybe I’ll take a drive to the hardware store tomorrow and take a look at the Minwax

I have had some problems with Minwax’s Polycrylic and heat. I used it on a table and put something hot on it and it turned white. I ended up having to refinish the table. So… just a word of caution.

Personally, though, I would use it on almost every application if possible.

Not sure if this will help but during Thanksgiving a water glass sweated and made a white spot. I used toothpaste to clean the white spot. The table had wax (Johnson’s Paste Wax) on it so water and wax dont mix. However toothpaste wont hurt anything and it might remove the white spot.

My son removed Water (beer?) marks on a laminated Hammond organ with a hot air gun. It was like magic.
