What the Duck is this?

I carved a sign that looks like a duck for a friends sister inlaw. It will set up on her mail box. He had already cut the duck out. After carving I used my fancy new Jessem Doweling Jig to put 2 1/2" oak dowels in the bottom. I had to get the hand plane out and level the bottom so the lettering would be level with the earth. The dowels are quite tight so I just pushed in a little and will let my friend glue them in and cut to length. Not sure what he is going to use for a base for the duck to sit on.

Here is side 1. The lettering is Utah font and is 3" tall and two lines.

Here is side 2.

Here is the doweling jig. The material was 1" thick mesquite. So I centered the jig and drilled the dowel holes in 2".

I added a 3rd dowel hole.

So currently I am waiting for shellac to dry so I can paint the lettering white with acrylic paint. He will finish the sign with spar urethane.

Here is first coat of titanium white. Will need 2-3 coats

My recommendation would be a nest.

Seriously, I do love the way the grains flow like feathers. :+1:
