Where am I going wrong

First post, glad to be here. I just got my xxl, set it up, followed directions and had no problem doing the Hello world test using a marker. Now I’m trying to cut holes in waste board for inserts, and the spindle is going outside of the parameters I set in Carbide 3d. This is what I did
-opened the standard waste board and changed the size to 32x32
-changed the scale to 1in
-rearranged the hole pattern, ran the simulation(looks right) and saved the g-code
-started the machine and homed to back right corner
-cleared the offsets(all parameters read minus.118 not minus 5.00 as indicated in instructions
-moved the machine to where I wanted the starting pointe to be at the bottom left hole

  • lowered the cutting bit to the surface, then zeroed, x, y and z
  • started the machine, seems ok as it starts cutting the first few holes, but then comes forward below the set starting point it goes, cuts a hole, then comes even farther forward and off the waste board altogether and tried cutting a hole. that’s when I stopped it
  • I tried starting over several times with the same results
I tried rechecking layout in Carbide, and resaved it, Now it seams to have moved the hole pattern way over to the right.
I could be totally wrong here but it seams like I’m not setting the starting point correctly
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

In your setup tab where is your toolpath zero set to?
Also fair warning, the xxl has a cutting area of 32 inches by 32 inches, but part of the cutting area front to back overhangs the front of the machine a bit

Can you post the file you have?

Not sure how to attach file

I was able to pull it down, from when you had it.
So the holes that go along the perimeter of the workspace would fall outside of where the machine can move.

I have an older version of carbide create, so there might be some issues here with that. But I’m showing you had a negative value set for max depth. You want that to be a positive value. Max depth going how deep into the stock (.76 inches in this case), but with a - value in there you’re basically telling the machine that it should go above the stock. It can be a bit confusing, but hopefully that’s clear.

Also I know not everyone learns from vides, but the carbide3d channel is really helpful, and one of the videos addresses what you’re after:

Hope this helps. Let us know if you still have issues after changing value, and watching the video.

Will do, Thanks for your help

Changed size from 32x32 to 28x28 and everything came out perfect. Thanks again for your quick response

The “front left” of the machine is off the actual wasteboard. The usable wasteboard space is less than 32", so that parts can be placed veritcally and cut at the front of the machine. Short version: front of wasteboard is NOT the machine’s front left coordinate.
