Why is my text two colors after I edited it

I was playing around with some text. I used a script font. The individual letters were script but they either were not connected or slightly over lapped. Using the node editor and the trim command I joined them all and then grouped them as one object. If I click anywhere on the word the entire word becomes selected and turns orange. When I click off it the outline of the word becomes light purple, and the inner parts of the letters are black. Just curious why that is.

The editing has resulted in open (enclosed) geometry.

Thank you. This was very helpful. I did it a different way but this way seems simplier and faster.
