Wiring VFD to E-Stop

Yeh M5 even! I had tool changes on the brain last night…

It’s a good question, I’m fairly sure if you kill the board it will just coast to a stop. I am wondering more about physically breaking the PWM connection. That I haven’t tried.

While I don’t have a VFD in front of me (or at all), I would think that ideally you’d set up a spindle kill switch such that:

  • Run mode: “PWM In” on the VFD is connected to “PWM Out” on the controller
  • Kill mode: “PWM In” on the VFD is connected to ground on the controller

You would then be dragging the “PWM In” line to your signal ground reference just as if the controller were signalling spindle stop. That precludes having a floating PWM input, which would could be subject to noise or other spurious signals.

Hey Luke. I un stacked (two for 220, one for 110) my e-stops in order to be able to shut down the VFD/spindle for tool changes. So the SO3 is on its own e-stop.

When I e-stop the SO3 the spindle winds down very quickly even though the VFD is still on. When I e-stop only the VFD the spindle continues to run for a while.

Do you have everything on one e-stop?
