Came across this old blog post:

All of this has me wondering what sort of joinery was used in a pair of lacquer chests my folks bought when I was quite young…
Not wood, but this might be an interesting option for some folks:
In particular, I could easily see working up a multiple part piece in metal, hiding the screw holes on the interior, and then machining wood to fit it.
