Wooden Cross with half lap

Fairly new to CNC. I have been asked to make a 6’5" walnut cross for a wedding. Im thinking about creating a half lap joint via the CNC. It seems fairly simple for the horizontal beam although it says its going to take a very long time to cut. How do you cut the vertical beam? And, any thoughts for speeding up the cut. I realize it’s walnut.

I would set them up on the machine like this and cut as a single rectangle pocket.
Pro Tip: Score the edges of the pocket with a drag knife or Xacto before cutting the pocket for nice sharp corners with no tear-out. Clamp a few scrap wood pieces on the sides to prevent tear-out as well.

Using a 1/4" cutter with 0.1875 depth of cut, 0.125 stepover, 120 IPM feedrate…

Or use a downcut bit for at least the first 0.1” …
