Would you use Create on Linux?

I’ve seen a few posts about folks running Create under various Windows emulators under Linux. That makes me curious whether it’s worth adding a dedicated Linux build for Create.

So, would you use Carbide Create on Linux?

Only click “yes” if you would absolutely use Create on Linux. Adding another platform adds overhead that takes from other development work. Clicking “yes” and not using it would probably lead to you getting less of what you’d otherwise benefit from.

  • Yes, I would use it
  • No, I would not
  • I feel the need to click something, even though I have no opinion

I currently use a linux laptop for running CM connected to my Shapeoko, it would be great to be able to open a file and make minor tweaks along the way instead of having to keep copying files over the network from my primary laptop

I would absolutely use it! I only have windows around to use Create. Going to Linux would allow me to dump the only copy of windows that we have and simplify my cnc workflows, file handling and system maintenance.

I would definitely use CM on Linux.

See:

I’ve been running Create Pro on Linux using Wine and running Motion using the Appimage container that was posted in the forum a while ago. Create runs just fine. I had to do some digging to get the Appimage to recognize the USB, but once I got those permissions sorted it runs just fine as well.

I would switch to a native version in a heartbeat, though. The place where I see issues (mostly just slowdowns) is in file i/o. For both the file dialogs in wine or appimage are very laggy and if I change a file after I open a dialog the changes do not appear and I have to close and reopen.

I’d prefer to remain on the pi platform, mainly because I’ve got a lot of them, but I understand all too well trying to maintain builds for differs flavors of hardware and their OSes. Thank you for putting out the pi beta. Other than having a very odd “OK”/“Cancel” dialog box on the “re-initialize” quick command, I think it’s great. I finally got to use my new jog pendant!

I am currently looking at switching all my desktops/laptops back to Linux and this would be very helpful in me moving forward with that. I am inventorying my software and services right now and this is one of the few I don’t want to switch from but might have to if I can’t get it running on Linux. I am a pro subscriber.
