X axis possibly losing steps?

Hey guys. Been using my xl since about April and everything has been good. Suddenly I had some random issues where my x wasn’t going down to zero when initially running. This cause my pockets to not be able to be as deep as intended. I replaced the belt and made sure it was tightened properly (guitar string tight). I’m still running into the issue.

I’ve now gone through and checked all the v wheels on the z and x axis. Retensioned x belt. And I’m still have an issue. I’ve also now discovered that my x axis is stepping to the right maybe 1-2mm with each pass in a pocket. I’m making a catch tray in the shape of Australia and it looks like pyramid steps on the left inside walls. I’m pulling my hair out trying to fix this.

I’ve reached out to carbide about the first issue but now have this extra pyramid step issue. I’ve run the test they sent me and I’m awaiting an email back. Please help guys, the only thing I haven’t done yet is check the stepper set screws on x and z. What is causing this?

Have you checked to see if the set screws on the motor pulleys haven’t loosened? If the pocket isn’t cutting deep enough that could be the belt is loose or the gear is slipping on the shaft.

I’ll be checking them tonight. Do you think it’s my x and z? Or just z? This isn’t happening on the right inside wall of pockets. That looks super smooth. It just seems to be stepping over a tiny bit each time z steps down. So I end up with this pyramid effect as shown in the picture

Also, the z works, that’s what’s odd. The first pass is just air carving. Then it goes down and is fine the rest of the pocket. I just miss that initial depth in my completed pocket.

How are you zeroing? Depth in Z being shallow is a symptom of the belt or pulley/gear slipping.

I use a touch probe. I’ll typically use x,y,z for most jobs but have tested just z as well and seem to be running into the same issue.

That part seems logical. I’ll check the set screws on the pulleys and figure that out.

Do you think that’s what’s causing my x issue with the pyramid steps on the left side as well?

If you think of the mechanics of the machine, if the shaft slips in the pulley you will loose steps.

Just pulled the x stepper and holy crap the set screws are lose. This is my problem. Thank you!

Might also try a little smaller stepover to take some load off.

Put some loc tight on them if you have any. The light will do.
