Y-Axis Belt Loose. Should I fix something that's not broken?

Good morning Carbide 3D Community,

After about 25 hours of successfull projects I have noticed that my left side Y-Axis cable is much looser that the others. It doesn’t seem to be negatively affecting my projects but I wanted to ask your opinions.

  1. Should I leave things be until my projects are affected?
  2. Should I tighten the belt and risk stretching?
  3. Or, should I replace it?

Please let me know what you think. Thank you!

I’d tighten it… the calibration difference will be extremely small (the amount of adjustment to tighten is like maybe 0.08" over 16 or 32") while slop is a much bigger enemy

belts might stretch a little on early use… just retighten BOTH sides

I’m with @fenrus.
“Much looser” is not great, and you would probably not describe it this way if it was tight enough that over-stretching will be a concern.
What I do when I need my belts “just a little tigher”, is use a marker on the side of the belt where it loops back onto itself near the belt clip, then release the belt clip screw, and shift the belt loop by exactly one tooth (that’s where the mark helps), and re-tighten. If that’s not enough, reduce by one more tooth.
If you can post a pic/video of how loose/tight each belt is, we may be able to provide more definitive advice.

and if it’s much much looser I’d also recommend to take a close look at the belt to see if it’s damaged somewhere or if it shows a small area that got much narrower (which is also a damage sign)

Yes, it is much looser. They were all the same in the beginning, but I was afraid to over-stretch it so I was wondering if just replacing it was the best option.

I’ve seen this kind of damage in the past, and there is no such damage right now. I will try to tighten it by a couple teeth.

I remember our discussion in March and how you had a belt stretch issue. “Hopefully” that was only a defective belt, one can normally tighten them so they are “guitar-string tight”, but I can understand why you would want to proceed cautiously, after this stretched belt incident.
