I am facing off some cutting boards. My regular spoilboard bit is dull and burning the wood so I switched to a Jenny bit. I manually set z with a ,001 feeler gauge and I set the depth of cut in Vertric to .01.
In Carbide motion it shows z cutting at -0.010 which would be correct but when I measure the cut with my caliper it measures
0.05 is this an acceptable error margin or do I need to adjust something
Sounds like you picked the wrong Z axis model in your initial machine setup.
The belt Z and the HDZ run the same direction on the stepper motor. The Z-plus runs in the opposite direction. The Belt Z and the HDZ and the Z-Plus stepper motors all have different steps per MM. I think that is what @Tod1d is referring to. If you picked a Belt Z or HDZ and have a Z-Plus you would fail initialization because the Z would go the wrong way to initialize. The newer Z-Plus may run the same direction as a Belt Z and/or HDZ but I am not sure. However picking the wrong Z would cause more/less steps per MM of movement and cause depth issues.
If you start CM and do not connect I believe the Setup button is available. Run through the setup and make sure you know which Z you have. You would also have to set the position of your BitSetter if you have one during the setup. If you have ever modified your shapeoko.json file be sure to record the settings for the three axis before running setup and edit your shapeoko.json file after doing a Setup. It wont hurt anything to run Setup.
Thanks for the replies . I ran through the machine setting again and did a test piece and now it is fine. I had not used the machine for a couple of months and it was fine then so I am not sure why it changed but it is fine now.
