Z axis grinding at start of job (w/ video)

After not using my SO3 for several months, I attempted to do a very simple project with it, and have run into an issue that I can not figure out. At the start of the job, the Z axis attempts to raise and hits the top of the carriage. It then attempts to keep going for a split second, causing the stepper to skip. It then proceeds to dive deep into my material. Instead of the .07 in I set the depth of cut at, it goes over an inch deep. See this video Anyone know what is going on? I cant reason it out myself.

I have had a similar problem, is your initial retract / clearance height above the maximum Z height of the machine?

CM is a bit dim and doesn’t bother to check whether a move is above the max Z and will just run into the top of the Z axis and keep grinding away, thinking it is stepping. This will then mean that it goes back down too far because it thinks it has to go all the way down.

Try a lower retract / clearance height and see if that fixes it.

I think you’re right. Had it set to just higher than my material thickness assuming it would be the height the bit was at when it moved the the next cut. Apparently it is the distance above the material. Thanks.
