Zero between jobs..newbie question

Thank you for all the help on my other new user questions as I’m new to CNC world as a whole, and I’m sure this has been answered or asked, I just can’t seem to locate it using the search function or keywords.

If I am running numerous jobs in a row, I can’t seem to reset the zero without having to exit out of CM, and turn off my machine. I have tried clearing all offsets, then making a new “zero” point (using the jog function, placing bit where I need and attempting to zero again), but it does not seem to reset to this new position. I do not get the prompt “set current location as zero”. At this point, I exit out of CM and have to restart, and go through the initialization process again. Am I missing a step here?

Again, I apologize for asking…just can’t seem to locate this!
Thank you for any guidance!

It should be as simple as:

  • jogging to where you want the new zero to be
  • choosing “Set Zero”
  • zeroing the axis/axes you wish to

See:

If you continue to have difficulties, let us know step-by-step:

  • what you did
  • what you expected
  • what actually happened

I have done this process and do not recieve the “set current location as zero” prompt. It still seems to be the previously set Z. I have tried to clear all offsets as well.

I will record my entire process when I get home from work and respond if it differs from this, but the process is:

After the project is complete and the machine goes to the back right corner, I load new file, rapid position to front center, change new tool/bit, then jog to new Zero (this is where I hit the issue). I try to set Zero and do not get any prompt or anything…I can click “set zero” and its as if nothing happens and no new zero is being set. I usually turn off CM, turn off my machine and do the entire process over again.

Appreciate the reply. I can record a short video if it will help demonstrate. Thank you

What point in there are you hitting “Start”?
When you rapid to the front are you telling it you are switching tools?

How are you using CM? Windows, Raspberry pi? The permissions to write the data to a file might be blocking CM from saving the setting.

Appreicate the replies.

Here is my exact process after finishing a job and the machine returns to the back.

-Quick action and re-initialize machine
-Load file (new job)
-Jog menu, rapid position to the front center and change tool (not prompted to, but it is in position to do so)
-After tool change, I jog to new zero point and set zero
I get no prompt asking if this is new zero location as I normally do when starting the
machine

-Run, start. At this point, no new zero seems to be set as the machine isnt even going to a starting point on the new work piece I again had to exit CM, turn off my machine, and restart the entire process. I am totally stumped as to what I am missing in the process.

I am running CM on a Mac Desktop. Thank you for the advice and help!

Here is how I do this:

Launch Carbide Motion:

Connect to Cutter

Initialize Machine

Prompt for loading tool

load a tool, allow system to measure tool

Jog

Query for whether or no to measure:

Continue since no tool was loaded since the tool was last measured.

Use the interface to jog to where zero is to be set:

Set zero:

Zero All:

Done

Run

Load new file

Verify the G-code in all tabs

Done

Start Job

The machine should lift, move to the tool change position, prompt for the first tool, then measure it, then begin running the file.

Appreciate the detailed reply! My issue is setting a new zero after running a job.

Ex.

  1. I complete job #1 with no issues (I can set zero here no problem)
  2. I am going to begin a new job, #2, with a new file…how do I now set a new zero?

That is where my problem has been. The only way I can is by exiting out of CM, turning off my machine, and restarting the entire process!

Thank you again for the detailed reply.

It should just work to jog to the new position, go to Set Zero, then set the new zero position.

Post a screen grab showing the Set Zero screen after setting zero?

The big thing is, as long as you aren’t using Stock Bottom for origin you can use the buttons for current XY and for Z+6 origin in Rapid Positions to verify that the position is set correctly.

I don’t believe there is a "Set position as new zero " prompt. You just go to the set zero screen after putting your bit on your zero - and zero all or the specific axis you’re zeroing. That’s it. No prompts…it just turns to 0.000 so you know that the axis is now considered at zero.

Click the “ZERO Z” button.

Will’s instructions for that step were descriptive, not verbatim.

Good luck!

Thank you for the replies and help everyone- I figured it out for the most part. Still a few issues I am having with the zero height with a new project, but I am working through it.

Appreciate the help, as always!
