0.7mm slot in wood?

Maybe a silly question, I was thinking about making my own bench scraper for cooking and such.
Looking at my existing scraper, the wooden handle has a slot that is about 0.7mm wide and 22mm deep spanning maybe 5 inches.

How the heck do they manage that? Is it something I can do in my own little shop?
I looked for thin kerf table saw blades and couldn’t find anything close.
Maybe there’s a band saw blade that could do it but I just don’t know, it’s so straight for such a long span.

Let me know what you folks think, I expect someone here has the secret…or it’s not a secret and I’m one of the lucky 10,000 to learn some common sense today :beers:

Thanks either way :slightly_smiling_face:

Bonus points if you can point me to a source of decent stainless steel that doesn’t come in 4’x8’ sheets

I suppose worst case, I could source the steel and put some teeth on it to cut its own slot.
Or maybe with some decent work holding and blade guidance, a fine hand saw could do the trick

McMasterCarr is my go to for al lot of materials.

My guess would be a bandsaw bade cut that, There might be a 3,5” mini saw blade with that kerf size.

If you set up two overlapping passes you could use a JointMaker Pro:

Yikes, that bridge city tax is rough. Though I’ll admit it’s just as pretty as everything else they make.

Maybe I’ll buy the blades and give a go at using them in my own jig before giving up and buying the joint maker in the end. I’ve got some other uses I could think up to justify the cost

Good call, I’ll look around. I hadn’t thought about checking whatever scale model makers use but it feels like they would have to do similar cuts.

Yep, @Redlander hit the nail on the head. ~3” diameter hollow ground blade and a 0.025” kerf should do the trick.

Now I just need a tiny table saw to put it in. New tool time

Use two pieces for the handle, not only does it avoid the problem you are working on but it also provides you a way to mechanically hold the blade in addition to the two halves of the handle together. Also allows for blade and/or handle replacement.

From your picture I can make out circles/pegs.

It is steep, but the fine joinery that could be attained is incredible. The ability to dial in a fit by hand is unique for sure.

There is probably a “dremmel” tool style table you could make?

Yeah I thought about that but I like the look and feel of a single piece handle enough to try making one myself.
I’ll probably end up making a few of each type to be honest. Looking to knife making for inspiration on the multi-piece handles.

You spotted brass rods holding the blade on this particular scraper :ok_hand:
