Best way to program a half round cut for a cigar ashtray edge

Good evening everyone! I’ve just started tinkering with our new machine and I’ve designed a couple of cigar ashtrays to be done out of various woods.

The initial program itself is flawless but I’m having a hard time figuring out the best way to program the cut in order to do the half circle notch where a cigar would rest on the edge of the ashtray. I’m using the base non 3D program at the moment.

I’m looking to get the notches 21mm wide x 10mm deep with a nice half circle profile. Is there a way to program this in the base carbide create v7? I would appreciate any insight or help, CAD is extremely new to me lol.

Our machine is the Shapeoko 5 pro machine with the VFD spindle kit if that matters.

Thank you all for taking the time to read and help out!

Do you have a ball-nosed tool with geometry to match?

If not, you would need to use a smaller ball-nosed and a couple of passes and multiple lines as noted at:

if you get stuck, post your file and we will walk through this with you.

Use a large Ball End bit.

Awesome I will take a look and see if i can make sense of this, I’m going to attach my file into this reply as well.

I do also have a couple of tools, 1/4in ball nose end mill as well as 1/2 and 3/4 round nose router bits I just do not know exactly how to add the tooling info into CC

Ashtray geometric.c2d (1.4 MB)

I do have a 1/2 and 3/4in version of these, I’m just not fully sure how to go about adding the tooling info into CC

Awesome! I did a bit of digging last night and found some rough info on a round nose bit speed and feed rates so I entered it all and figured out how to create a tool path using a poly line finally lol. From my test rendering it looks correct, albeit square instead of the round cut shape which if I understand is irrelevant.

I’ve got a speed of 18k rpm and I modified the cut depth to 1mm per pass so I can take it easy when it comes to cutting cross grain and not blow chunks apart. I’m going to run a test tomorrow using MDF and see how it works out.

It should preview as round if entered as a ball-nosed tool.

Hmmm I might have missed something  potentially because I added it into end mill tab under my custom menu?

:man_facepalming:t3: idk why I didn’t think to add it there, late night CAD adventures lol. I will switch the tool info over to ball mill before I test run the program tomorrow lol. Thank you!
