It doesn’t fail in the same place, no. The first time it failed, it was during the roughing stage, and failed more dramatically; the Z axis plunged down to its limit (before the material stopped it from going further) and then broke the bit. The second time, it was about 50% of the way through the detail stage when it failed by dipping down about 1/8" too far during one of the passes, then a few passes later came back up by about 1/32" and kept going at that level before I stopped it.
I can’t see anything that the Z axis could have hit…
My only guess at this point is that some sort of electrical glitch is happening due to all the static electricity. Anyone have tips on avoiding this? My USB cable has ferrite cores, but I have to use a USB hub due to the computer I have out there. I’m considering replacing it with a different machine that can have a direct connection.
It’d be cool if I could have a Raspberry Pi drive the machine.

Every other place I’ve seen anyone talking about static electricity causing problems is saying they experience disconnects, something that’s never happened to me. I’m also wondering if maybe the connections between the mainboard and the Z stepper motor are flaky; does that seem more likely for the problems I’m seeing?
I did not have dust extraction running when the more recent issue happened, and my area isn’t ultra dry.
