Books on turning and so forth

Anyone ever encounter the series:

  • Turning and Mechanical Manipulation by Charles Holtzapffel
    • Vol. 1: Materials, Their Choice, Preparation and Various Modes of Working Them
    • Vol. 2: Holtzapffel’s Construction, Action & Application of Cutting Tools
    • Vol. 3: Abrasive and Other Processes Not Accomplished With Cutting Tools

In the public domain scans are available in various formats at:

The series was suggested because I purchased either Guilloché: A History & Practical Manual by Calina C. Shevlin or The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World by Simon Winchester (which reminds me, I need to buy a copy of Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy by Wayne R. Moore)

Really makes me want a 4th axis…

Thanks for sharing, Will! That is a really cool set of references to look through-it looks like I’ve got a solid amount of tinkering to do in the near future. Oh, yeah, the dream of the 4th axis…I hope that comes true at some point in time!
