Carving photos on wood

Hi,
Has anyone here ever tried to make a wood carving from a photo? What software should i use?
Thanks

Yes.

One approach is to just cut the dark/light in the photo as a texture using Carbide Create Pro:

If that doesn’t suit, then one needs a way to interpret the photo’s use of dark/light to represent what the eye sees into height/depths.

Re-drawing or creating a model from scratch using some suitable tool.

Some folks have been experimenting with using LLMs for this.

Here’s a video featuring a photo created with a Shapeoko—you might find interesting.

Not sure if this has been shared here before, but I just came across this for 3D work:

https://www.sculptok.com/

It creates depth maps from photos. Going to try a few this weekend. (You would need Carbide Create Pro for this)

Let us know how it works for you. Looks intriguing.

I have not been able to reproduce any photos as those shown in that video. I believe the video was done using vectric software, CC does not seem to have that same ability. I have used sculptok a lot to produce stl models for 3d images of photos. However, not every photo is a good candidate. You’ll need to play around with the images to find a look you like. Sometimes you’ll also need to manipulate the photo too. My wife has told me some of the images I’ve done look like zombies.

This is my first attempt with SculptOK

It’s pretty cool.
