Fun little newbie project: Ball in Box

Here is a great little project that gives some insight to thinking in 3 dimensions, modelling only 2 geometries, and ends with a toy that people are compelled to pick up and study.

I will have to try that one. Thanks

I already have such a long project list…but I’m gonna have to try this one too. Earn my apprentice badge :slightly_smiling_face:

The key to this is work holding. You machine 6 sides and need a good zero. I included the file, but doing your own modelling is great practice.

Very cool. May have to give that a whirl.

I noticed your stock size is 1.5" in X and Y but the Z height is .750". Shouldn’t the stock be perfectly square? What am I missing?

You are correct, however you are machining all sides and the software doesn’t know that. That’s why I mentioned “thinking in 3D.”

One only cuts half-way through with each operation — the bottom half will be cut in successive operations.

So the stock is actually 1.5" square, correct?

Yes sir. It only cuts half of the geometry on each operation.

I suppose step one is to make a hard stop eh? I can’t believe I don’t have one already…truly an apprentice :person_facepalming:

I got a good start on one this afternoon, well until my CFO decided I need to run around the house on the mower.

The step over on the third tool path with the .25 mm TBN didn’t seem right. The file had .050", I changed it to .005".

I must have done something wrong, mine doesn’t look anything like yours :face_with_spiral_eyes:

@HeuristicBishop

Yep, you used the metal polish instead of the Danish oil……. You can tell by the mirror finish!!

@Ed.E

That looks great! I.m gonna have to try this now!

I guess you did not RTFM . What a surprise.
Beautiful work

Unfortunately, it will be Sunday before I can back on mine. Wedding anniversary today. My CFO says if I want another anniversary next year, stay out of the shop!

I think I have a holding fixture figured out to hold the ball and cage for the last side where the ball is cut loose. I’ll have to test cut it, probably 3 times. :roll_eyes:
