In OVER my head

Well, I saw the video of coin making on the Shapoko 3 and decided (with naïve enthusiasm ) that I would like to make some coins for my adult children that I’m sending to Israel for a couple of weeks.
Soooooooooooo. I started out trying to see how to make it work in just std. CC only to find out that it really needs Pro CC. Not only that, but special bits to cut and engrave, etc., etc, etc.

At any rate, I have had a LOT of great help from the support at CC. What a fantastic bunch of people they are.

That said, what I thought might be a nice remembrance of the experience, is turning out to be not only expensive, but very difficult to accomplish. HOPEFULLY some of you might be able to help me get to the finish line before the end of the month…when they return.

Attached is the file of the face of the coin. Crosses around the outside edge and raised map of Israel, dates and verses.

I can’t seem to get the coin to look right in the view simulation, and since I have not purchase the PRO version of CC, I’m concerned that I might not be able to make it happen. With the purchase of bits, s/w, coin blanks, etc… I’m headed towards $3-400 dollars just to see if it can work.

At any rate, can anyone take a look at this face (for now as I have the back of the coin still to go) and give me some help please??

Thanks in advance for all your consideration

Looks like the only true 3D portion is the map of Israel. I think your depths are a bit deep.

I think I would just advanced v-carve the whole thing. Optionally 3D milling the map. With the crosses engraved.

Thank you for helping with this. The image looks really good, but when I try to load your file, I just get a blank screen?? Any idea why?

I suspect a v7 file.

Please try this:

Well, kind of getting there, but not soup yet.

Using v6 with CCPro.
I can get a deceit 3d view in modeling for the map, but the lettering cuts all the way through instead of being “raised” like the map, but flat on top. I have changed every perameter that I can think of in the model tab but nothing cle

Well, now I have the 3d model working the way I want, but the actual tool paths don’t seem to follow the 3d model. I’m sure I’m just to slow to find out the problem, but help would be appreciated.

After celebrating the fourth trying to become independent of designing 3d coins, the good news is that I have reached what appears to be a good 3d model of what the face should be. !!! Hooray !!!1

But it seems the fireworks become duds when I try to create the tool paths.

I am just 2d on the crosses around the perimeter so that is good, but trying every bit size and every depth I can not get the wording to come out in the simulation.

Attached is my latest file and any consideration/assistance/help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve ordered the bits and the coin blanks and just about ready to pull the trigger for CCPro, but I have to at least be able to simulate the final design correctly before I can do that.

Attached is the latest iteration. Hope for any input that get this to a finish line.

Thanks

One thing which I find helps w/ toolpaths is to draw things up in profile, and then to draw up the tool in profile as well — makes it obvious whether or no things will fit and informs what size tool(s) will be necessary.

Appreciate the help, but I’m so lost I don’t even know what that means. I guess I was right when I said I’m OVER my head in this.

While I have bought the bits and coin blanks, this is just too frustrating to try and develop. Going back to 2d where life is a lot simpler.

Thanks for now.

Cut a section through a smaller detail, and trim out the raised portion.

Move the section off the part, and build a side view of your part. It looks like your letters are 1mm tall

Now draw up a side view of your tool, and see how it fits.

See the problem?

You would be better off cutting all of the lettering & pocket area with 2D. Then only use 3D for the map if so desired. I personally think it looks pretty good in 2D with advanced V-Carve.
I would still recommend making the pocket shallower. 0.5 mm or even 0.25mm

Here’s what the cross-section would look like with a 60° Vee-Bit at 0.5mm max depth

Appreciate the help. I really do, but I’m so screwed around with this I don’t think I’m thinking very well right now. While I have the coin blanks and the bits, I think I’m going to give up for a few days and see if I can get “unscrewed” in my mind.

Then, maybe I’ll give it another shot or just give it up.

Thanks again for everyone who tried to straighten me out but I need to step back and see what develops.

IF I decide to take another run at it, I’ll post some more.

Well, I’m back after trying to clear my head on this project and starting again.

Attached are two files for a coin…face and back. The most important part in my mind is the etching on the back of all the names. Not sure what, if any bit, can do this but if anyone has any ideas, I’d certainly be interested. The depth I have set is not “cast in concrete” and whatever depth might work is find.

I can engrave the face also, if need be, but would like to keep the map raised if possible.

I have 40 of these to do…if it is possible, in the next two weeks.

HELP…still in over my head.

I will purchase the CCPro just as soon as I can get a final cut design that works.

THANKS for any help you might be able to probide.

Well, I continue to be in over my head, but trying hard to keep swimming.
I have given up on trying to model anything on this as nothing seems to come out.
I have set up the best I can for the face, so far, and using only engraving. The edge crosses seem ok and the map might work, but not matter what I try, I can’t get any thing to show up with any decency on the lettering for the face (Israel, 2020, and the verses.) Do I need a smaller bit, I’m currently choosing the smallest in the tool database, but that doesn’t seem to get it done either.

I’ve tried adv. Vcarve with 90 and 60. I’ve tried just Vcarve with every mm setting possible, I think, but still doesn’t get there.

I see people doing watch backs and other small engravings. How does that happen?

I’ve ordered the following bits:
Various Sizes: 1/8’’ shank; bits diameter: 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.3mm, 0.4mm, 0.5mm, 0.6mm, 0.7mm, 0.8mm, 0.9mm, 1.0mm, 1.1mm, 1.2mm, 1.3mm, 1.4mm, 1.5m, 1.6mm, 1.7mm, 1.8mm, 1.9mm, 2.0mm, 2.1mm, 2.2mm, 2.3mm, 2.4mm, 2.5mm, 2.6mm, 2.7mm, 2.8mm, 2.9mm, 3.0mm.

I have 40 coins and if I can at least get the “show simulation” to give me a reasonable view, I will order the CCPro and keep going.

Any one have any ideas? Is this even possible to do?

Forgot to attached the latest file. Sorry.

You have a lot going on in such a small space, have you thought to reach out to @wmoy for his opinion?

I have reached out to him but not heard back yet. I don’t see how this is so different from the videos CC shows on creating “coins” and no one seems to be able to help.

IF someone will just say that you can’t do any details in coin design, I will just give up. So far I’m in for over $250 and yet to buy CCPro, but I will if anyone can tell me if CCPro can do these designs.

Here is one solution engraved

And another with just advanced V-Carve

Is either one of these what you are looking for?

Thanks! That is very close to what I’m looking for. Did you actually cut that or is that a pic of the simulation? Did you use the same bits for the same parts as my file?

This will go a LONG way if getting me there. If you let me know what you might have changed or if I can see your files that would be great. I’m not on V7 yet so a V6 file would be great.

THANK YOU!
Frank

It’s just the simulation. I changed the tools to a 60° Vee, and reduced the depth.

I down loaded the two files, but when I load them into CCPro(trial version), the tool paths show empty?

I even tried to load them into just standard CC, and then there are no tool paths at all.

Any idea why? At you using V7 maybe?

Thanks
