Inlay Stars in CC v 8

I am getting back to using Shapeoko Pro 5. I figured it was a good time to make a break from CC v7 to v8.

I want to some inlay stars.

For the pocket / female – do I want to Vcarve (where I don’t check on Enable Area Pocket)? And set the depth do “t”? Or do I want to specify a depth – which means I need to Enable Area Pocket?

Based on the the answer to the above question – what would be the settings for the plug? Using “t” without Enable Area Pocket seems to be a more effecient way to carve the star pocket/female, but then I am confused on what to do for the plug.

Thanks. I searched for videos and the main inlay video was an old version of CC so it didn’t address the questions I have.

A star shouldn’t be markedly different from any other design for a V-carving inlay.

Do the settings in the samples in:

not work?

I see two ways to create the star pocket: essentially Vcarve (using “t” as depth) or Adv Vcarve where you specify the depth (which then uses an end bit as well as vee bit)

Using Vcarve seems to be faster and no bit change, but then I am not sure to use for the settings of Starting Depth and Max Depth.

It mostly depends on the size of the stars & the stock. If they’re small, regular V-carve will work well. If they’re larger, you may not want to go that deep.

In either case, the male as it approaches the points of the star will have sharp ridges. This means they will fit tightly to the bottom of the female pocket at those locations. To achieve a bit of a glue gap, you may want to lightly sand those sharp ridges to prevent the plug from bottoming out, and giving yourself a little room for compression when clamping.
