Lost communication

I have a SO 3XXL. I am running an older version of Carbide Motion on an older computer. I was running a simple sign program. The pocket portion worked fine and I opened the Vcarve file and started. It ran for a short time and the stopped and “lost connection”. I had been having some trouble and it was suggested I try a different USB connection. I changed the cord and ran the program. It continued to cut until the last 5% and stopped again and “lost connection”. I played with the cord and then ran the program without a bit and it ran completely through. I inserted the bit and started the program again. It ran through the previously cut Vcarve and again stopped at the same place with about 5% to finish and “lost connection”. Is it a problem with the code or electrical interference? Thanks.

If it’s a problem with the G-code, Carbide Motion or Grbl should issue an error.

You can test for EMI by running an “air cut” with the spindle off, no stock, and no dust collection — if that completes, then it’s probably EMI, for which the solution is usually addressing grounding/static:

Another possibility is a loose/bad USB connection getting vibrated so as to cause the problem, but usually that can be addressed by coiling the cable at each end and putting some weight on it so the tension of the coil pushing the connector into the port.

It might be a failing board, but that’s pretty rare.
