This will be my first carve into brass. Should I just use the Aluminum settings. I’m making an Ice Cube branding block from a 2" x 2" x 1" block of brass. I’m using Build 813, Built on: 2025-01-15 Free Edition OpenGL: 2.1 Metal - 88 (OpenGL 2.1) on a Shapeoko 4 XXL.
We have a bit on machining brass at:
The big thing is which alloy are you cutting?
Definitely which alloy. If you’re using 360 brass, it cuts like butter, even better than aluminum due to the bit of lead. I’ve cut several branding irons in it. Winston (@wmoy) has done a video on it which I used for some parameters. Here’s a link:
Thanks William, I don’t know what the make up of the brass is. A friend of mine bought it on Etsy and asked me to put his initial in it for ice cube branding. I’ll be using a 1/8 for the main pocking and a 1/32 bit on a contour around the letter the project. I was figuring I could try the aluminum & reduce the feed in carbide motion to be a litter safer. I’m I nuts?
