(and they even have the open pail-style module which is no longer available from Home Depot)
Curious if other folks are using modular tool boxes and if so, which brands and how they’ve been working out (I’ve been considering switching over to Systainers…)
Will, I went with the Harbor Freight set (because my sister-in-law only gave me that much money for last Christmas! )
It allows my to limit the tools I carry, but there’s room for my eclectic variety of mechanican to electronican tools and supplies. I didn’t see the advantage to me of the extra space used by sliding drawers.
The Bauer option wasn’t available when I was making my selection (it was far enough back that there weren’t that many at the time), and it took a while for drawers to become available:
(note that that has since been replaced by the “real” drawer units — I still have a bunch of the Harbor Freight organizers, and I’m debating on either filling them w/ Gridfinity bins, or using them for Lego bricks)
I really hate the idea of a bottom unit which can only be reached via unstacking (in retrospect, storing all my sharpening stuff in the Husky one was a bad idea).
At some point, I’m going to have to break down, lay out a couple of tarps, empty out all the toolboxes and take everything down off the pegboard, then systematically re-arrange the tools — maybe if I can figure out what is suited to be in the bottom unit, I can make that work — if not, I my need to update to something like @Redlander has (if memory serves, the Rigid system has an option for a bottom unit which has drawers).
I only need a couple of additional tools, mostly larger ones, and I believe that I should be able to integrate a shooting board (which is one of the tools which I need) into whatever setup I work up — we’ll see.
That’s the biggest drawback with the Rigid original series I have is the cavernous bottom box. It holds a ton of stuff but… I have to disassemble the stack to get to its treasure. It is used mainly for the circular saw, sawzall, trim routers. It’s usually unpacked after a job and then packed with the tools needed for the next job. The rest of the stuff is standard fasteners, hand tools etc that stay packed all of the time. They have some really nice Gen 2 stuff out now that really allows more customization for storage. They even have one of the small vacuums that latches on the top. I really need one of these…… NOT!!
