New user - can't get it to work!

New Shapeoko 5 Pro user. Designed my first very simple jackolantern face using only contour cutouts. I could not get the machine to use the bitsetter, so went back through setup and got that to work. Now I can’t get the spindle to start up and see nowhere to set speed etc. Ran the job, but the bit just went into the material about 0.01" and moved with the pattern, but no spindle working to spin the bit. Also, the bit plunged straight through the cedar picket (no bit damage luckily). I have NO idea how to proceed. The spindle is “on” (red ring lit up), but zero action or spin. Help this newbie please! Thanks!

Share your jackolantern face file here if you would. (From one former new user who had the same types of struggles starting out.)

My laptop is updating :man_facepalming:, so I wll try when it is done. One suggestion I found was to go into the file, find the spindle line and make sure it was “1”. I went into the code and it was 0, but there was no way of changing it to 1.

I hope this lets you open it… Thank you!

There are two notable configurations which need to be done:

  • Carbide Create: be sure “Carbide 3D Shapeoko” is selected under Edit | Select post-processor
  • Carbide Motion: enable and configure the BitSetter in the Setup Wizard

Technically, the Carbide 3D post does not need to be selected if you’re loading the C2D file into Carbide Motion.
