Overlaying engraving on 3D contour

Struggling to model this. I can model a contour, and do one of two things:

  1. “cheat” and overlay a line vector on a height map in illustrator - and set the line opacity so it roughly matches the right depth when it converts in carbide.

Problem with this is the line isn’t a smooth cut, it’s just treated as part of the 3d contour and ends up losing or degrading the edges.

  1. I can import a dxf or svg of the vector and subtract it from the 3D model. Same issue, plus I have to make weird extra paths so it closes the line segments.

If I keep the shapes separate, when I run an engraving option it doesn’t follow contour.

Maybe just beyond carbide create. Just hoping I’m missing some other option.

If I understood what you are trying to do, I think you may like this :

(when there’s a need, there’s usually one of @fenrus nitfy tools to do it!)

yeah that sounds like what I’m looking at, and as mentioned there, I’m also trying to cut roads into a topo map. So you’re saying there’s a chance!
