Before the Quick Draw pen holder, most folks just zip tied a marker to the router body, aligning it along the channel for the plunge mount:

A while back, I actually sourced some metal tubing, a spring, and a very narrow ball-point pen with the intention of making it into a pen mechanism which would fit in an 8mm collet, but shelved it when I realized I could instead just put a D2 refill in a small ER collet…

A few months ago I posted that I was a little irritated at how difficult it was to swap pen colors when I was making multi-colored yard sale signs, and how I had planned on designing a new pen holder that would hopefully eliminate the need for having to precisely locate the pen tip height every time you needed to swap out the pen.
