Rough Tool Path Settings

I’ve been trying to use a serrated roughing bit from yonico on my S4 for roughing passes. Also, I’m using a Makita router. I’ve experimented with many different settings for speed and feed. I can get good performance but excessive heat is a real problem. I have to stop every few minutes to let the bit cool. I’m cutting hardwood. I’d like to purchase a higher quality serrated bit, but im hesitant until I can get the settings right. So, what do yall think my problem is?…

  1. Is using a router on a hobby grade machine simply not compatible with a serrated rigging bit? Is the S4 too flimsy?
  2. Are my settings too aggressive or not aggressive enough?
  3. Is the cheap bit the problem?
  4. What settings are you using?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

What are the parameters you are using ?

Carbide 3D recently added what I assume to be a similar tool to their lineup:

it might be that the feeds and speeds for it would make a good starting point.

For more on these concepts see:

and:

At what speed is the router. It should not exceed 4.

I’ve been running the router at 3-4, 1/4” doc, 80-100 ipm. I’ve mostly been using it for contours. Also I use an air compressor to blow out the cut as I’m running.

Interesting that info page for el Ocho says it’s only for use with spindles. That might be my answer. Has anyone used el ocho with a router?

Thanks for your input.
