I’m looking to extend the Y-axis of my S4XXL by a foot or so and am looking to see if this has been done by anyone. The main concern is finding the extruded rails. I figure the other hardware can be made or acquired “easily”. Has anyone attempted this?
The SO3 had upgrade options. Those old parts are still floating around. The SO4 was only sold as the 3 sizes C3D offered. So you would likely have to buy a used SO4 to tear apart to get the parts needed to extend your machine. Likely doable but upgrading to SO5 would be easier. Not sure about modifying cm for a larger SO4. Possible but not easy. Might need a 3rd party controller.
Thanks. I had a brief email exchange with the C3D guys and they pretty much said the same thing. Until I get some cashflow off the S4XXL I think I’ll keep it and suffer through. I’ve been making a piece (lap steel guitar body) which is too long in one dimension to mount squarely on the CNC deck so I have to draw and make it at a 45 degree angle to vertical so it will fit. It works, but is a real bear to keep the blank properly located as it’s a two-sided job.
If you are using the latest v7/v8 of CC you can do tiling. I recently did a tiling job, my first, and it worked perfectly. Attached is a pdf I made of how I did my tiling.

First of all, that’s a very good writeup. I’m not a CC guy, but Vectric, that I use also offers tiling which I have never tried. I may take a look at it if I haven’t gotten my 45 deg project perfected on prototype 4 which may go under the knife tomorrow. This project (like all my 2-sided ones) uses pins to properly locate my blank when flipping and if the blank isn’t drilled perfectly there lies the biggest issue. Marking and mounting the blank is the toughest because if those initial holes aren’t right, the top and bottom alignment will be hosed up and with this particular piece it’s hard to tell until both sides are done and that’s 6 hours or so.
Tiling in Vectric works pretty much the same way.
