"Selected File Could Not Be Loaded" Error

Good Evening all. I am new to the CNC community and very eager to learn…so stoked! I have the 5 Pro enroute and should get it by the end of the week so I’m learning Carbide Create Pro and thought I would download some projects just to see how things are done. I’m having a bit of an issue…when I click on the file or select import file I get this message “The Selected File Could Not Be Loaded” then a bunch of file locations. What am I doing wrong? I’ve downloaded files from Carbide’s page, Cut Rocket and Etsy and have the same issue with all of them except for two. Any help would be Greatly appreciated. Windows 11.

What kinds of files are these? Give us the full name and extension (but we don’t need the directories)

I can’t see the type but under properties it shows this.

5e5005c0ba548_5e50062710adc.c2d (1.7 MB)
Program Carbide Create V8 (.c2d)

Not sure if that’s helpful at all but these came from the Carbide website so I assumed they would just boot up. I tried extracting as well.

That is a version 6 file, see:

Here it is as a v8 file:

5e5005c0ba548_5e50062710adc_v8.c2d (384 KB)

Ahh so this is software that isn’t backwards compatible with projects built under older builds. Got it. Will the older versions work with the Pro 5? If so, has anyone downloaded the older versions and kept them in different partitions on the hard drives? I certainly appreciate your help!

Version 7 is available at:

If the file was created with v6 and below you have to open in v7 and save. V7 can be used in v8. When v8 came out they had written the code new and is not backward compatible. Just open in v7 and save. After that v8 will work. Save it in v8 to update the files for the future.

Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated and hope I can get started soon!

I have the final / latest versions of Carbide Create V6, V7 and V8 as I have had my Shapeoko for a few years with files created at different times during Carbide Create’s evolution. Files associated with each are kept with each version and can be brought into V8 compatibility as noted by Will.

This may be a matter of semantics but it is not necessary to have the various versions in different partitions on your disks. I keep the project files and programs in different directories.

Basic computer management procedures. Good practice in keeping track of your applications and data files.
