So I’m currently in the process of purchasing a used Shapeoko 3, with roughly 10 hours of use on the cnc. I’m a woodworker, but I’m a first time user of any CNC Router. I wanted to reach out to the community and ask whether there are issues with the Shapeoko 3, I need to be aware of currently. All pros and cons are welcome, I was consider a brand new XXL, but I’m trying to save on money up front. Thanks for the inputs. -Jason
I still use my Shapeoko 3 (serial #0006) upgraded to XL size and w/ an HDZ and a Mafell FM 1000 WS quick change spindle, even though there’s a Pro XXL right next to it.
Things to consider:
- price
- which Z-axis? if a belt-drive, consider a Z-Plus Shapeoko Z-Plus - Carbide 3D or HDZ: Shapeoko HDZ for Shapeoko 3 - Carbide 3D
- a Maintenance Kit: Shapeoko Maintenance Kit - Carbide 3D will allow one to rebuild a machine to like new
- accessories? One would want at least T-track and clamp kit or some other scheme for work holding suited to the work you plan to do
What sort of projects do you wish to do? How do you wish to approach them?
I have bought two used Shapeoko 3, XXL and XL. Both machines were great values. I have upgraded the XXL to an HDZ and eventually resold the XL. The Shapeoko 3 is a great machine. The newer 4, HDM and Pro machines are great but a Shapeoko 3 will do a fine job for general woodowrking.
I am a traditional woodworker. I have been doing this for 45+ years. I bought my Shapeoko to supplement my traditional woodworking. However the Shapeoko took over but I am still doing a lot of traditional woodworking.
My caution to you is the CNC machine has a steep learning curve. It will take time to master the hardware/software. The Carbide Create and Carbide Motion will get you a long way. You may eventually go to some of the commercial software. Be warned the CNC is addictive.
Here is a pdf I posted of a project I am currently working on. As a traditional woodworker it may be of interest to you.

Wow! That’s a beautiful piece you are working on. I love traditional woodworking and its really what I enjoy the most out of creating pieces from wood. But I’m diving into the deep end of the pool, in the world of CNC. So I’m expecting some bumps in the learning process. Thank for the advice and sharing. Keep creating!!!..
Thank you for the inputs on the Shapeoko 3 XL. How easy is it to upgrade the Z-Plus or HDZ. Can you integrate a Shapeoko 3 BitSetter in the 3 XL CNC? What T-Track and Clamp Kit would your recommend? Plus, what kind of vacuum system or setup do find affective for this size CNC?
Project wise I looking to create accent features for some furniture projects, as well holiday signs and bowls, etc… The creativity is limitless in some categories of wood design. So I’m swinging for the fence.
It’s pretty straight-forward to upgrade to a Z-Plus or HDZ (see the instructions on docs.carbide3d.com )
Yes, the SO3 BitSetter works on an SO3 XL.
Can’t really speak to vacuum systems.
All the projects and materials you describe are suited to an SO3 XL.
