Shapeoko 3 XXL Initialization errors

Good day everyone,

Super excited, just finished building my Shapeoko XXL. All setup yet when i followed the instructions and finished setting up the setting page, i pressed the initialized button, the Z axis (the new one) moved up with the router but never stoped until it hit the top, then vibrated then got the errors.

Error(3): Homing Cycle Failed
Error(4): GRBL ERROR: Homing Failed, couldn’t find limit switch.

I tried to test the limit switch by placing a metal stick underneath and the red light lit up so it is working assume.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, even made a whole enclosure for it so super excited to get started with it.

I’ve tested the switch and it lights up.

next … move up the Z (just turn the axis) and see if it lights up from the actual Z carriage…
(the turning needs to be with the machine off, or you can use jogging I suppose)

Not possible to jog w/o initializing.

You can move the machine using the MDI instead.

Please check and see if the cylindrical post which triggers that switch is securely in place.

Let us know what you find out at support@carbide3d.com and we’ll do our best to work through this with you.

looking at your picture more. it looks like the switch is under a slight angle…

maybe loosen those 2 little screws and 1) get it down as far as it goes and 2) make sure it’s fully parallel

Tried this and is perfectly parallel but no luck.

I see the metal post and it looks all ok.

Not sure how to move the machine incrementally with MDI.

Is there a possibility you’ve got the Limit switches hooked up in the wrong order on the board? (Is the Z switch indeed hooked up to the Z pins on the board)

Power up machine
Connect to cutter
Go to settings
Look at active pins.
Hold your wrench under the Z prox. Switch and see what comes up

  • Connect to the machine

  • go to MDI

  • send

    G91

which sets to incremental distance mode

  • send

    G0 Z10

which should move up 10mm from the current position

  • send

    G90

when done to restore absolute distance mode

When i hold the wrench to the Z sensor it shows Z in the Pin settings

I tried the MDI and made it move up incrementally but i could not see the light turning red and it vibrated when it reach the top like before.

Ok, I think you should try this…

with the Z fully retracted, when it’s making that noise, shut the machine down and then power it up again, and go into settings to see if Z pins are active.

Please adjust the Z-axis homing switch down and verify that it will activate against the cylindrical post (whose presence you have verified).

No pins are active when it is making that noise.
When i put the wrench manually i get this.

This is the pin correct?

That’s the correct post, looks like it’s in the right spot. With the switch adjusted to the lowest position, it should complete the homing cycle without issue.

Wait a minute! Is that yellow plastic on your Z-axis motor mount? Is your router jamming against it??
