Shapeoko 5 pro and vfd spindle issues

I received the rev 4 controller on Saturday and it fixed all of my issues. Bitsetter works and the spindle performs as intended. I am up and running and making chips now.

Where are you finding your revision and is it only rev3 thatā€™s the problem?

Itā€™s on the front sticker. I donā€™t know if rev 3 is the only one having problems, but rev 4 has fixed mine for the time being.

Weā€™ll be sharing more on this, but we had two back-to-back manufacturing errors from our up-to-now incredibly reliable electronics vendor. We have an on-ongoing discussion with them, and we rushed an order to replace any affected boards. The gist is, if your spindle goes to 24K on power-up, itā€™s the S5 controller, not the VFD. I can also say definitively, that grounding the chassis has no bearing on performance or functionality. Whatā€™s important is grounding the spindle body and EMI shield (and the VFD unit itself, the grey plastic box). Our support team has prioritized these replacements and we expect weā€™ll get everybody up and running ASAP.

Well my machine shipped on the 21st of this month, so hopefully it has the new controller, etc. according to article linked. I will be Putting it together this Sat. Excited to see this thing finally working and for me and my family to be able to learn CnC together. Glad they got everything sorted out.

I got my new controller last night and hooked it all up. Everything seems to be running great now!

Glad to hear it, Hopefully Carbide team members will stay on top of things and save a lot of headaches for customers and themselves with better quality control in the future.

So it seems as if this is a recent issue. I bought my machine in the May time frame. I believe it is a v2. Should i expect to have spindle issues as well because I was considering a spindle purchase but I donā€™t want to purchase it if thereā€™s a chance of my unit having the same issue without having another controller shipped with it as well.

So put the 5 pro 4x4 together today, havenā€™t fired it up yet, still making sure everything is tight and wires are secured. but what do I do with this spare limit switch? what is it for? sorry for what is probably a dumb question.

The spare limit switch is exactly that, a spare to be held in reserve in case one fails.

ok , but does it go in control box if one fails? tried to google. Btw , the instructions and packaging, Labeling was the best I have ever seen in my 46yrs. went together like butter on bread.

The homing switches are mounted on the structure of the machine ā€” youā€™ll see things light up when the machine initializes.

Ok thx, I wont actually fire it up until Saturday probably, still have some wires I want to zip tie and clean a few things up before I test it out.

Ok I see them now, I didnā€™t really notice them While I was plugging electronics in. but I was jamming to Tunes and working away.

GEEZ FEEL SILLY NOW, LOL, was a snake it bit me. I really was like wtf is this lolā€¦ Pray for me, hehe

Well I got my version 4 controller installed on Saturday. Much to my dismay, the Y limit switch thinks it is always being triggered. I did take a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLdcV5aLe_g to validate all settings. None of the lights show as being triggered because they hit their limits.

I deleted all the files and set it up as a new machine. Still no dice. I also tried swapping out my spare limit switch with the version 4 controller. Itā€™s still showing the same Y limit issue.

I switched back to version 3, and while the spindle does spin up to 24k RPM, it can initialize the machine without any issues. No Y limit switch issues.

I sent an email to support, and so far no word back from them.

Sorry to hear that. Has to be Frustrating. did you try shutting down and manually moving gantry to back right corner and Z all the way up, unplug, let sit for a few, replug/ and restart laptop or whatever then try to reinitialize. or Turn on mdi and type G0 Y0 X0 AND SEND.
