Shapeoko bitsetter fail during initialization

I have a Shapeoko xxl. Running carbide motion v5 on my MacBook Pro. When I do the initial startup, it moves forward, stops for bit insertion, when I click for the bitsetter measurement, the bit moves over to the center of the bitsetter ( older model, v1?), then moves down the z axis 1 inch and freezes. I get a “probing cycle failed” message.
I don’t see anything mechanical, Z moves freely when power is off.
Tried multiple restarts.
Reloaded with fresh v5 motion driver.
Still freeze probe cycle failure. Exactly the same each time.
I am out of ideas.
Please advise.

Which Shapeoko do you have? 3, 4 or Pro?

Which Z-axis does your machine have? Belt-drive, Z-Plus, HDZ?

Have you configured the machine to have the correct Z-axis?

Do you have a BitZero? Where is it? Where is the ground lead? Are they touching?

I have an xxl purchased in 2019. Not a pro.
It has the z-plus screw drive.
I have the bit zero (older version) at front left.
It works fine
Bit setter is at feont right corner.
Don’t know what you mean to “configure correct z axis”.

Went through the load defaults as advised.
It’s fixed!
Thanks for that!

Check your BitZero magnet. If it is touching ground or the BitZero you will get a BitSetter error.
